Volunteer station network

Your station can give Venezuela seconds

Sismos Venezuela is a free earthquake information service. Detecting an earthquake early takes stations close to the source, and inside Venezuela almost none shares its data in real time. If you own a Raspberry Shake seismograph, or have a place where one could run, you can help.

Why stations are missing

The stations are far away

Today we analyse public stations in Colombia and the Caribbean. In recent earthquakes the wave took 30 to 50 seconds to reach the fifth station we need to confirm the event.

Every nearby station saves time

A station in Venezuela, Aruba, Curaçao or Trinidad shortens exactly that path. It matters more than any change to the software.

The data is yours

Your device sends its own measurements straight to our server. You decide where it sends them, and you can stop at any time.

Two ways to take part

I own a Raspberry Shake

In your device settings you add one more destination (the DATACAST feature). Your stream to the Raspberry Shake network stays as it is. No ports to open, nothing to install.

I can host a station

You have a quiet place with power and internet: a home, a school, a radio club, a fire station. We have no devices to hand out yet, but we would like to know where there is room.

How it works

1

You register

You give us your device ID, the area and an email address.

2

We write to you

You receive the server and a dedicated port for your station by email.

3

You add the destination

On your Shake: Settings → DATACAST → new destination with that server and port. It works at once, no restart.

What is sent and what is not

Yes

  • The sensor measurements: channel, time and values.
  • The station ID and approximate area that you give us.

No

  • No personal data from the device.
  • No exact address: internal maps use a rounded position.
  • Your email address is not published or shared.

So you know

We are in a testing phase. At first we only record the data and measure its quality; it does not trigger any alert yet. If a station proves useful, it will later support detection. Sismos Venezuela does not replace FUNVISIS or civil protection.

For example R1A2B. You find it on your device page (rs.local) or in StationView.
The city or municipality is enough.
